Lithium, Li-ion, LiFePO₄ – how does it actually work?

Blogs

When it comes to batteries, the word lithium comes up all the time. That makes sense, since lithium batteries are used in many devices we rely on daily: smartphones, electric vehicles, and also large industrial machines.
But what exactly do ION or Li-ion mean? And is that the same as LiFePO₄?

The answer lies in the composition:
Lithium-ion, abbreviated as Li-ion, is the general term for a group of lithium-based battery types.

  • LiCoO₂: Lithium Cobalt Oxide
  • LiPo: Lithium Polymer
  • NMC: Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt
  • LiFePO₄: Lithium Iron Phosphate

The differences in chemistry affect safety, durability, and performance.

Why Movexx chooses LiFePO₄
At Movexx, we’ve been investing in researching and developing the best batteries for our Smart Electric Tugs for over ten years. And one thing is clear: LiFePO₄ is currently the best choice for our machines and our customers.

Here are 5 key reasons why:

  1. Safety first
LiFePO₄ is much more stable than other lithium variants. It withstands high temperatures and poses very little risk of overheating, fire, or explosion. That makes it an ideal solution for demanding environments like hospitals, data centers, and warehouses.
  1. Environmentally friendly
Our LiFePO₄ batteries are dry gel-type batteries and contain no cobalt or nickel, but rather iron and phosphate. These materials are abundant and less toxic to the environment. They can also be placed in any position (vertical or horizontal) without risk of leakage.
  2. Long lifespan
Movexx’s LiFePO₄ batteries are equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS) and last up to 5 times longer than traditional batteries. The BMS protects the battery from overcharging, deep discharge, overheating, and short circuits – all factors that help extend battery life. Did you know the BMS also monitors the State of Health (SoH) of each cell? This helps prevent voltage differences inside the battery and ensures optimal longevity.
  3. Recyclability
Thanks to their simple and relatively safe chemistry, LiFePO₄ batteries are easier to recycle and more environmentally friendly at the end of their life cycle.
  1. Optimal performance
LiFePO₄ offers high energy density and consistent power output. Whether it’s moving a hospital bed with our BedMover, a server rack in a data center, or a train of luggage carts at an airport – there’s always enough power.

    In conclusion
ION, Li-ion, LiFePO₄… these terms are often used interchangeably. But at Movexx, we know exactly which type makes the difference. That’s why we equip our electric tugs with LiFePO₄ technology.
Reliable. Safe. Sustainable. And ready for the future.
